More Bicyclists?
This is a really cool video about bicycle commuting in Tokyo. Neat-o! How long would it take for universities to do something like this?

Riding buddies
High today: 62
Low today: 41
Went for another mtn bike ride tonight.. the weather has been absolutely spectacular and perfect for riding. Here's Adam and Laura trying to figure out all the settings on Laura's new bike!
Heidi below coming out of the "after hours trail". We were laughing about the girl to guy ratio on our ride because none of us have ridden with more gals than guys ever. Normally the ratio is more like 5 guys to 1 gal at least!
The colors are changing in Fairbanks. It is awesome watching it happen but I am a little nervous about the quick transition to winter. I'm ready for riding in the darkness though with a new bike light for the winter.

Southward once again
Headed down to Palmer this past weekend for the Alaska State Fair.
The drive down was nice... although why we were heading south when the weather was absolutely spectacular in the interior I am not sure. It would have been really nice backpacking this weekend again but I did want to check out the fair and visit my friends down south.
Here we are at the Denali south viewpoint.. the mountain is actually out in the background but my camera couldn't capture it.
We got into Palmer just as the sun was setting around 10pm.
Saturday morning , Nikole, Bob and I did some riding at the Crevasse Moraine trails in Palmer. These are the trails Nikole and I attempted to ride in March.. in March they were a SHEET of ice! They were fast up and downs, similiar to Kincaid but not as regularly ridden on.
Bob-o was having so much fun that he just fell over.
Go figure, a few minutes later attempting a steep uphill, I lost my momentum and could not unclip in time to abort bike. This is why I normally abort steep long uphills altogether. Oops.. thanks to Nikole for getting a shot as I'm trying to unclip! :-P
Woohoo! We found a designated mtn bike trail. I was pretty excited. It was a nice singletrack with lots of trees to get your handlebars caught on at parts.

After the ride and a shower, I headed to the fair to work a booth for a bit. That night there were some fireworks.. the first I have seen in awhile. It was like the 4th of July!
Sunday morning our plan was to hike Lazy Mountain (don't be fooled by the name) but were all too lazy and slept in. We landed ourselves at REI and Moose's Tooth... the two places I will drive into the city for!!
Here are some spawning salmon hanging out in a creek by the Knik River.
Jeffro thinks that we need a hatchet strap to secure the bikes.

Car shot! Talk about a packed car. We did good.

My Awesome Sister
Thanks to my sister Patty for sending A LOT of delicious Pittsburgh-made Sarris chocolate back with Jim last week... and some Hawaiian treats, too! (thanks to Jim for not eating it on the plane ;) )
Here's a picture of me and cousins Jim and Carla. We went out to dinner for Carla's birthday the other day. Jim's is tomorrow - Happy Birthday! You stay as young as your youngest cousin, right??
Headed to Anchorage/Palmer this weekend. We're going to hike one of the peaks that I have been wanting to do for awhile. Yay! Check back Monday for pics...

Whoa, I missed my bike
High today: 67
Low this morning: 47
No pictures, but I went mountain biking with a friend tonight who works at Goldstream Sports and we had an absolute blast. My mountain bike has been more than a little abandoned this summer due to other fun activities, and I completely forgot the high I get riding on the trails... I had a big grin on my face for the 3 hours we were out riding.. esp. shooting down the downhill parts and flying through puddles. Must bring that back more before the snow falls, then its back to snow riding which is almost as fun. :-)
Today marks the day that I left Fairbanks for PA one year ago. That means that the season (weather-wise/light-wise) is all new to me through January 10th! How will I survive it?? Stay posted!

Backpacking Kesugi Ridge

The beginning of our hike was dominated by wet trails and blueberry bushes.. a LARGE distraction to actually walking. Then we got our first of many rain showers!

Talking about leaving, the blogs from my previous two summers will be disappearing on September 9th. I'm losing my webspace and email from PSU (finally) so they will be obliterated. I'm going to archive it somewhere though.. maybe just save the text entries anyway. If you want to take a look before they are gone to see the progress from day one in AK to now, check them out before they're gone!
